New York City iconic artist Kenny Scharf, creates psychedelic drawings that echo the world of surrealism, chiefly those rendered by the famed surrealist painter Salvador Dali. A fixture in the Pop Art scene in the 1970s, Scharf honed his skill for creating youthful and futuristic works on the streets of New York and Los Angeles, alongside legendary artists Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. He is the only living artist from this elite group of artists and continues to inspire viewers with his eccentric and humorous prints and paintings. A print by Kenny Scharf is an absolute must for any serious Pop Art collector.
Kenny Scharf (b. 1958) is a contemporary painter who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Scharf received his B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1980. He remained in the city and became a key figure in the East Village art scene, exhibiting in numerous galleries and eventually renowned institutions.
Scharf’s vibrant, saturated and playful works evoke cartoon imagery and challenge the line between high and low art. In 2001, he created one episode of his own animated series, “The Groovenians.” He has also designed album covers for various artists including The B-52. His acclaim led his work to be included in the 1985 Whitney Biennial. He is active in the New York gallery scene, and also appeared in a 2004 documentary, “The Universe of Keith Haring,” owing to a close friendship with the graffiti artist.
